Overview/Vision/Concept

To establish a dedicated Medical Program with a technologically transdisciplinary ecosystem, the confluence of basic sciences and engineering disciplines, clinical experts, state-of-the-art fabrication and testing facilities, ancillary services for regulatory and design consultation, as well as facilitation of clinical trials are needed. Most of the above components of the MedTech ecosystem at IIT Kanpur are functional, while some are in the process of augmentation and development. Given the fact that IIT Kanpur has strong foundations in science, engineering, and technology, it is well poised to lead modern research in medical sciences. With its strong track record and infrastructure in MedTech Innovation, IIT Kanpur wishes to address this gap by establishing a one-of-its-kind Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology to bring in a paradigm shift in approach towards medical research and innovation in the country. Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology is envisaged to bring in a paradigm shift in approach towards medical research and innovation in the country.
School is expected to:

The Gangwal School will have the following three major components:
Super-Specialty Hospital : A 500+ bedded super-speciality hospital, with a world-class facility on board, will offer affordable treatment in specialities like oncology, cardiology, cardiac surgery, endocrinology, neurology, neurosurgery, etc. to over 4 million people in the 300-km radius of Kanpur.
Centers of Excellence (CoE) for R&D in Futuristic Medicine : The SMRT will be the confluence of IIT Kanpur’s faculty, cutting across the disciplines built on the backbone of a super-speciality hospital and various CoE. This will serve as a major hub for MedTech innovation in futuristic medicine.
Next-generation Post-graduate Medical Education : School plans to run super-speciality postgraduate medical programs like DM and MCh (and dual-degree with Medicine and Engineering) as well as DNB and DrNB. Gangwal School will be the first-of-its-kind institute in India to provide academic programs to medical and engineering students under one roof with cross-learning between two fields developing future medico-engineers with expertise and exposure across clinical, research, and healthcare streams.
